Is it ‘normal’ to feel so down sometimes?

Here are some of the reasons why you can feel this way …

1. Ignoring your own values

We each have an individual internal arrangement of things that really matter to us. In the event that we go against these values in an attempt to fit in with our associates or friends, or in trying to appease others, then this will result in a depletion of our true selves.

The more that we deceive ourselves in a bid to gain acceptance from others, the less of the ‘real us’ remains. Such a statement seems obvious, but it must be recognised that many an emotional and mental trial is the result of conflict arising from not letting yourself be yourself.

2. You are lonely

Moods aren’t controlled by how many people are, or are not, in your life, but the quality of relationship with those that are firmly intertwined and their influence on you, is going to have a deep impact on your emotional state.

The depth of connection that you feel to these individuals you really are most regularly in contact with is so important. If those closest to you from a contact perspective, cannot though, see and acknowledge the ‘real’ you, then you may as well be detached from them. Close proximity, physically and, these days, remotely, should mean that being able to act naturally is a given. If this isn’t the case it is perfectly possible that you are lonely in a crowd.

3. You have experienced past trauma

Do you have a distinct sense that an experience from your youth may have been more damaging than you have allowed yourself to recall?

Or is there a series of memories from that time that are kind of dim and hard to confront?

When supressed recollections and subdued feelings flicker to the surface, we can out of nowhere feel awful instantly. Moods will be irrational, and behaviour can be strange. You may even have odd dreams or waking visuals.

It doesn’t need to be something significant that triggers the flashbacks that bring back these formerly dormant fragments of episodes past. In some cases it’s as straightforward as your supervisor shouting at you, or just having a bad day at work. Whatever is the catalyst, once the previously buried ‘something’ rises to the surface, it will be there for all to see.

4. Your childhood didn’t prepare you for the ‘real world’, and adulthood

Maybe your childhood was extraordinary looking from the outside in. Possibly you even had parents who never separated, a nice family home, and all the other prerequisites of a balanced home life.

But out of public perception, maybe your parents couldn’t give you the adoration and genuine acknowledgment a kid needs. We require parental figures who don’t just deal with us at an essential level, but who we can depend on to be there for us when we need them inwardly.

Without that intrinsic support network, we end up grown as adults with intimacy issues and low confidence. Life never has a sense of security or certainty.

5. You were never taught how to be happy

It’s unlikely that you attended a class in school where they walked you through how to initiate an uplift in your own emotions. There is no handbook on how to be at peace with yourself, and the day-today narrative that comes at us from all sides with always-on news broadcasts, is one of sadness, failure and malaise.

Even parents, in their bid to protect their offspring, instil an anticipation of negativity as they instruct you to ‘stay safe’, with their exceptionally negative convictions about others and the world at large.

Perhaps, through no fault of your own, you experienced a childhood that was tragically misled. This can mean that as a grown-up, you still consistently feel misgivings. How to move past this? Who can be upbeat when feeling the world is against them?

For the lucky few, there was a family member, teacher or friend that led them forward. Their voice becoming the internal monologue that guided along the path around trouble and towards an inner peace.
